As part of Halton's 50th Anniversary celebrations, we recently had the pleasure of hosting the Big Halton Heritage Nature Watch at Spike Island, Widnes, on Friday, 16th August. It was a fantastic day filled with nature, history, and creativity.
Here’s a quick recap of what made the event so special:
Welcome and Introductions Our day began with warm welcomes and introductions. It was wonderful to see such a diverse group of participants ready to explore and engage with our local heritage.
Guided Walk with the Mersey Gateway Environmental Trust We were honoured to have Dr. Andrew Wolfenden, Biodiversity Manager, and Stephanie Harrison, Conservation Officer, from the Mersey Gateway Environmental Trust. Andy delivered a fascinating talk as we embarked on a guided walk, providing insights into the transformation of the estuary over the past 50 years and enhancing our understanding of our local environment.
Creative Workshop: Sketching and Cyanotypes After a refreshing lunch break, participants dove into a hands-on creative workshop. We explored sketching and cyanotypes—a unique art form that uses sunlight for printing. It was an exciting opportunity to experiment with artistic techniques and create some truly unique pieces.
Photography Walk with Lauren from Hazlehurst Studios To conclude the day, we joined Lauren (aka Quayle Social) for a photography walk along the canal. Lauren’s expertise and enthusiasm inspired us all, helping us capture the canal's beauty from new perspectives and deepen our appreciation of the area.
Special Thanks to Catalyst Museum Volunteers We were also joined by a fantastic team of volunteers from the Catalyst Museum, who turned out in force to support the event. Their dedication and enthusiasm added a wonderful energy to the day, and we’re grateful for their involvement.
A big thank you to everyone who joined us and to our wonderful partners and volunteers who made this event possible. We hope you enjoyed exploring, learning, and creating as much as we did!
