Celebrating Halton's 50th: Nature and Art at Wigg Island

On Saturday, 14th September, we had a fantastic day at Wigg Island for the Big Halton Heritage Nature Watch! This event marked the final walk of the funding celebrating the borough of Halton's 50th birthday and brought together community members to explore the natural beauty of our local environment while engaging in creative activities.

A Beautiful Day to Connect

The day began with warm welcomes and introductions, and we couldn’t have asked for better weather to enhance the experience! With sunshine and clear skies, participants were eager to connect with nature.

Guided Walk and Photography Session

We were excited to have Dr. Andrea Drewitt from the Mersey Gateway Environmental Trust lead our guided walk. At the same time, Lauren Quayle (Quayle Social) guided participants in capturing the stunning landscapes of Wigg Island through their lenses. As they explored the area, Dr. Drewitt shared insightful commentary on the biodiversity of the site, while Lauren provided tips and techniques to help everyone make the most of their photography.

Cyanotype Magic with Rachael Prime and Claire Pitt

While the walk was taking place, Rachael Prime and Claire Pitt engaged members of the public with the magic of cyanotypes. They demonstrated this fascinating photographic technique, inviting everyone to create their own sun prints. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement as participants experimented with this unique art form.

When the walkers returned, they eagerly joined in the cyanotype activities, applying what they had learned from Rachael and Claire to create their own beautiful blue prints. This blend of nature exploration and creative expression truly captured the spirit of the day.

Looking Ahead

While this was the final walk of our funded project celebrating Halton’s 50th birthday, it is an experience we would love to repeat in the future. Stay tuned for announcements about more opportunities to engage with nature and the arts in the coming months, and we hope to see you at our next event!

Thank you for being part of our community and for helping us celebrate Halton’s heritage through nature and creativity!
