Thanks to funding from Halton Borough Council's Halton 50 Funding, 2024 marks a significant milestone – the 50th anniversary of the Borough of Halton. Established in 1974, the borough united the towns of Runcorn and Widnes, along with several surrounding villages, into one vibrant community. To commemorate this occasion, Halton Borough Council has introduced a special funding opportunity to support community and cultural initiatives throughout the year.
As part of the ongoing celebrations, Hazlehurst Studios hosted a unique collaboration with the Runcorn Women's Institute (WI) on Sunday, 4th August. The Runcorn WI Takeover Day offered WI members the chance to explore a range of creative art forms in a welcoming, hands-on environment.
The event was the brainchild of Cos Denman, a Runcorn WI committee member and associate artist at Hazlehurst Studios. Cos organised a packed schedule of creative workshops, tapping into the expertise of both WI members and Hazlehurst Studios artists for a truly collaborative experience.
Creative Workshops Included:
Indigo Dyeing with Cathy Rounthwaite
Cyanotypes with Rachael Prime and Clare Williams
Photography Skills with Lauren Quayle
Printing with Cos Denman and Phoebe Eatwell
Tile Painting with Helen Tyrrell
Urban Sketching
We were also honoured by a visit from the Mayor and Mayoress of Halton, Kevan and Andrea Wainwright, who enjoyed seeing the creativity unfold.
In addition to leading a photowalk session and sharing tips on mobile phone photography, our studio artist Lauren Quayle documented the day’s events with her camera.
It was a fantastic day of creativity, connection, and community spirit – a perfect way to contribute to Halton's 50th year celebrations!
